Beyond Festive Sales: Are Electronics Retailers Ready to Capture the Margin Opportunity?
As festive discounting puts pressure on electronics margins, protection is becoming an increasingly important revenue line. But capturing that opportunity requires more than simply making a plan available at the point of sale.

The festive season is approaching, and India's electronics retailers are getting ready.
Inventory is being planned. Store teams are being strengthened. Brand promotions are being negotiated. EMI offers and cashback programmes are being finalised. The objective, as it is every year, is to capture the surge in consumer demand that comes with the festive buying season.
But alongside the race for volume sits another, equally important commercial reality.
The festive season is also one of the periods when the economics of the core product sale come under the greatest pressure.
Discounting intensifies. Consumers compare prices across stores and online platforms. Cashback, exchange offers and financing schemes become table stakes. Retailers may sell significantly more units, but the margin opportunity on the product itself does not necessarily grow at the same pace.
This is where protection becomes strategically important.
Extended warranties, accidental damage plans and other forms of product protection have emerged as an important value-added revenue line for electronics retail. They create incremental revenue around an existing transaction and can contribute meaningfully to the economics of the sale.
Retailers understand this. Yet many still do not capture the full potential.
The reason is straightforward: protection is often still treated as an add-on, rather than as a revenue line that needs to be prepared for.
And festive performance is usually determined long before the festive sale begins.
The margin opportunity is known. Capturing it is the harder part.
Protection does not automatically perform simply because it is available. Its success depends on the entire distribution environment around it:
- Does the sales associate understand the value proposition?
- Can they identify the right product quickly?
- Is the customer receiving a relevant recommendation?
- Are incentives clear?
- Is the plan easy to issue?
- And does the retailer know whether its investment in sales enablement is translating into outcomes?
When protection is treated as an add-on, many of these questions are left for the sales floor to solve.
That is a difficult strategy at any time. During festive season, it becomes even harder.
Higher footfall means less time with each customer. Sales teams are already navigating product comparisons, changing offers, financing options and exchange schemes. The retailer cannot expect a high-margin revenue line to perform consistently if the people selling it are asked to figure out the process in the middle of the rush.
The opportunity, therefore, is to prepare protection with the same intent that retailers prepare inventory, promotions and financing.
Start with the people who will make the sale happen
Protection is ultimately sold through a customer conversation.
But that conversation does not need to sound like an insurance conversation. A sales associate does not need to explain every technical detail of a plan. They need to understand the customer's ownership concern and communicate the value simply.
That requires structured sales enablement.
Festive season also brings additional complexity to large retail networks. Teams vary in experience, brand promoters work alongside store staff, and new resources may join ahead of peak demand. A single training session is rarely enough to create consistent behaviour across thousands of customer interactions.
Retailers need training that prepares the sales floor for the actual moment of sale—simple narratives, clear product understanding and continued engagement.
This is a critical part of Zopper's Assurance model. Beyond providing protection products, Zopper helps prepare the people responsible for distributing them through training and sales enablement programmes.

A protection strategy may be designed at head office, but its success is ultimately decided on the retail floor.
During festive season, the right recommendation has to happen faster
The biggest constraint during the festive rush is time.
Higher footfall means sales associates have less time with each customer, even as the number of decisions within a transaction increases. Customers are comparing models, evaluating discounts, considering financing and trying to understand cashback or exchange offers.
Protection has to fit into that compressed conversation.
This is where recommendation intelligence becomes important.
The challenge is not simply to give the associate access to every available protection product. In a high-footfall environment, they need to know what is relevant for this purchase, quickly enough to act on it.
A smartphone may require a different protection proposition from a television. A premium appliance may warrant a different conversation from an entry-level product. The right recommendation depends on the product, its value and the customer's ownership needs.
During the festive rush, that decision cannot rely entirely on an associate manually navigating multiple plans and options.
Zopper's digital products bring recommendation intelligence closer to the point of sale, helping make relevant protection propositions easier to identify and recommend.
If Protection Matters to Margins, It Has to Matter to the Sales Floor
The next challenge is participation.
During the festive season, sales associates are working in a highly competitive environment, often balancing multiple brand schemes, targets and incentives. Protection may be financially important to the retailer, but unless the programme creates genuine engagement on the sales floor, it can easily lose attention to more immediate priorities.
This is why incentives alone are not always enough.
The strongest sales programmes do more than offer a payout at the end of the month. They create momentum. They make performance visible, introduce healthy competition and give sales teams a reason to actively participate.
Zopper works with retail partners to design engagement and incentive programmes that make protection more than another target on the sales associate's scorecard. Through competitions, challenges, rewards and ongoing engagement, the objective is to create excitement around participation—particularly when the retail environment itself is becoming more competitive during the festive season.
This matters because protection is ultimately distributed by people. A programme may have the right products and economics, but it still needs the attention and participation of the sales floor.
The goal, therefore, is not simply to incentivise the sale. It is to build an environment where sales associates want to participate, compete and perform.
The festive opportunity is too important to leave to the billing counter
The festive season will always be about selling more products. But as discounting intensifies and core product margins come under pressure, retailers also need to think about how they create more value around every transaction.
Protection is increasingly an important answer.
The opportunity is already visible. The difference lies in how well retailers prepare to capture it.
Those who treat protection as another product at the billing counter may capture part of the opportunity. But those who prepare it as a revenue programme—training their teams, engaging and incentivising the sales floor, enabling faster recommendations, simplifying distribution and measuring what works—are better positioned to realise its full potential.
That is where Zopper Assurance comes in.

Zopper helps retailers prepare the wider protection distribution ecosystem: from frontline training and engagement programmes to digital recommendation tools, protection distribution and visibility into how the programme is performing.
The festive season is coming, and retailers are already preparing their stores.
The next question is whether they are preparing their protection revenue engine with the same intent or not.
