Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G530H Grey
Worth a look but better alternatives exist
3/ 5
Pros: - 64-bit hardware; good amount of expandable storage - qHD resolution screen - 8 megapixel rear camera Cons: - Bulky and somewhat unattractive - TouchWiz is still a pain to use - Not much value at this price compared competitors Verdict: If the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime were priced cheaper than Rs. 10,789 it would be a worthwhile option for consumers. If one can find it a discount, it's definitely worth looking into. Otherwise, efforts from Motorola and Redmi exceed it in terms of value. Review: Samsung is all about the expensive flagship smartphones these days due to the release of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. However, its easy to forget the forays its made into the budget market in the past few years. This can be seen in the Galaxy Grand series which often competes with the best that Motorola, Micromax and Asus has to offer. The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime signals the companys return to compete once more. This time, it offers a bit more to help stand out from the pack. The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime wont impress you with its plastic build but its far from unappealing. Weighing 156 grams and measuring 8.6 mm thick, the device is a little bulky but incredibly solid. The white back panel dont smudge or slip from your hands, and its easy to handle the phone despite its size. Speaking of size, the Galaxy Grand Prime sports a 5 inch TFT screen with 960x540 resolution. This is arguably the biggest detriment to the device since the competitors like the Motorola Moto G (2nd gen) manage HD resolutions at similar prices. The low resolution affects the sharpness of text but its the susceptibility to glare that also harms the overall visual quality. At least the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime gets a lot right in terms of performance. Its quad core Snapdragon 410 CPU is clocked at 1.2 GHz with 1 GB of RAM as support. The 8 GB of internal storage is complimented by a microSD slot which offers 64 GB expandable storage. In terms of UI features, one will have to make do with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, perhaps in an effort to keep costs down (since the CPU is capable of running Android 5.0). Youll kind of wish that TouchWiz took advantage of the new redesign seen in the Galaxy S5. Aside from Google Now, there is an Ultra Power Saver mode for further increasing battery life. Camera optics are good with the 8 megapixel sensor though its only marginally better than the Moto G (2nd gen)s camera. Full HD recording is fluid and the front facing 5 megapixel camera delivers some decent snapshots as well. The 2600 mAh battery is capable of 8 to 9 hours of continuous performance and can actually compete with Motorolas devices in terms of average day to day use. Other recommendations: As stated above, the Motorola Moto G (2nd gen) just offers so much more for its price at the moment. However, even the Motorola Moto E (2nd gen) 4G is worth looking into. It features a Snapdragon 410, 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage. The screen is slightly smaller at 4.5 inches but of better quality and includes a 960x540 resolution. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, the Moto E (2nd gen) 4G is a steal at Rs. 7,499. There's also the bonus of Android 5.0 Lollipop and 4G connectivity which the Galaxy Grand Prime does not have. Another worthwhile option is the Redmi 2. Its custom Android 4.4 KitKat may turn off some people but at Rs. 5,999, you receive pretty much the same specs. The differences of course include a 1280x720 resolution for its 4.7 inch display and 4G connectivity. The Redmi 2 is also superior to the Moto E (2nd gen) 4G by including an 8 megapixel rear sensor with BSI.
