Samsung Galaxy A5 SM-A500G Midnight Black
The Samsung Galaxy A5 is a good device but only on its own
5/ 5
Samsung has always had a love-hate relationship with its mid-tier smartphone crowd. At one time, the company was celebrated for the Galaxy S2. Its performance made it an excellent flagship even when the Galaxy S3 was gaining success. Nowadays, Samsung phones are a dime-a-dozen and there is no mid-tier phone that Samsung could be proud of like, say, the Motorola Moto X. That's where the Samsung Galaxy A5 comes in.

It offers a strong bit of performance, strong build quality and currently supports Android 5.0.2. Speaking about the design, the Samsung Galaxy A5 is pure aluminium. No more fussing about with cheap plastic Samsung delivers the metal goods to its fans. Weighing 123 grams and measuring 0.26 inches, its as sleek as it is lightweight. The Samsung Galaxy A5 features a Snapdragon 410 clocked at 1.2 GHz with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB internal storage. It also features a microSD slot for an additional 64 GB of storage. Overall, it offers a fluid experience with barely any slowdown. That's good, right? However, the price of Samsung Galaxy A5 is Rs. 20,900. By comparison, the Motorola Moto X (2nd gen) costs Rs. 21,999 and offers far better hardware. That's not all though. At this price, the Samsung Galaxy A5 features a 5 inch, 1280x720 resolution Super AMOLED screen. The quality itself isnt a huge deal breaker. In fact, colour quality, sharpness and viewing angles are pretty good overall. But you can do better for roughly the same price.

Connectivity options are on point at least with support for 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. Surprisingly, the rear camera includes a 13 megapixel sensor with auto focus and LED flash. Whether Samsung decided to focus on this at the cost of performance is unknown but its intriguing all the same. Low-light stills are decent, as one with expect, with the Galaxy A5 excelling in day time shots. The front facing camera is average as well with its 5 megapixel front sensor. Battery life is well done with the 2300 mAh cell providing a strong 8 hours of heavy performance. As to Android 5.0.2, its material design and revamped features help the Galaxy A5 more than Android 4.4 KitKat did. Its just a better smartphone overall as a result.

1. Sleek, lightweight and sturdy design
2. Performance is reliable
3. Overall above average battery life

Value for money is somewhat debatable, considering other options

Other recommendations:

As noted before, the Motorola Moto X (2nd gen) is a steal at Rs. 21,999. Not only does it have better hardware (Snapdragon 801 CPU) but the 5.2 inch screen is more beautiful with its 1080p resolution. Though limited to a 2300 mAh cell, the battery life is actually pretty good, lasting roughly 10 to 11 hours and a full day of average usage. The overall functionality is better with Android 5.0 since Motorola emphasizes the stock interface above all else. Even then, its extra Moto apps like Moto Assist are more worthwhile. Really, from the camera quality to the overall performance, its hard to not recommend the Motorola Moto X (2nd gen) at this price unless you really need a microSD slot for additional storage capacity.

The Samsung Galaxy A5 is a good device but only on its own. When compared to the Motorola Moto X (2nd gen), it falls short in many ways. The aluminium frame is a strong selling point though, and if you cant find a Moto X (2nd gen), the Samsung Galaxy A5 worth looking into.

From a quality standpoint, it's sleek and solid
5/ 5
The Samsung Galaxy A5 SM-A500G is an evolution of the company's Alpha series of smartphones. At 6.7 mm thick and weighing 123 grams, it features a fully metallic unibody design. The specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 clocked at 1.2 GHz with an Adreno 306 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. Internal storage is 16 GB with a microSD card allowing for 64 GB additional space. The 5 inch Super AMOLED screen sports an HD resolution while a 13 megapixel primary camera sensor and 2300 mAh battery round out the device.

- The design is a great departure from Samsung's previous smartphones. It's solid, comfortable and feels much more premium.
- 5 inch Super AMOLED display with its 1280x720 resolution includes Corning Gorilla Glass 4. Along with a sharp 294 pixels per inch and balanced colour quality, the screen is protected from scratches and dents.
- Network connectivity includes 4G LTE, 3G and Wi-Fi. Overall connectivity is strong and there is support for multiple SIM cards (the second SIM slot also works as a microSD slot).
- The primary camera's 13 megapixel sensor is backed by an LED flash and auto focus. It delivers high quality images in the day time and the 5 megapixel front sensor is very good for selfies.
- Android Lollipop is now available.  TouchWiz offers smooth lag-free performance and the interface is easy to use.

- Value for money is low, especially considering competitors with stronger overall specifications and hardware.
-  Rear camera produces some grainy shots when used in the night time.
- Battery life is average at best. The Samsung Galaxy A5 doesn't tend to last an entire day.

The Samsung Galaxy A5 SM-A500G's price is Rs. 20,900 depending on where you purchase it. From a quality standpoint, it's sleek and solid even if the design is very familiar. The primary camera and display quality make it worth looking into for Samsung fans but those seeking a little more bang for their buck may want to look elsewhere.

The Motorola Moto X Play may not be as widely available at the Samsung Galaxy A5 SM-A500G. However, at Rs. 19,999 it offers a 5.5 inch full HD display which looks gorgeous. It also runs on a Snapdragon 615 clocked at 1.7 GHz with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB internal storage. With a stock Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS and 3630 mAh battery, it offers great performance for its price.
