Nokia Lumia 520 packs great value for money
If the past couple of months have taught us anything about smartphones, it’s this: You can always get more for less. Sometimes you need to compromise, but for the most part, budget devices like the Micromax A116 Canvas HD and Karbonn Titanium S5 have let us have our cake and eat it too. When it comes to a budget Windows 8 device, the choices are a little more limited. But if Nokia proves anything with the Lumia 520, good things do indeed come in less costly packages. The Nokia Lumia 520 continues the tradition of a unibody, monoblock design with a clean front. The overall casing is sturdy and strong, weighing only 124 grams and measuring 0.39 inches thick. The body curves inwards towards the back panel, unlike the flat surfaces of the Lumia 820 and 920. This helps it fit more comfortably in the hand and feel a tad bit less awkward. Specs Like its older brothers, the Nokia Lumia 520 features a dual core Snapdragon S4 Plus. The chipset here is the MSM8227, which means a CPU speed of 1 GHz. It also comes with 512 MB of RAM and 8 GB internal memory with a microSD slot for 64 GB more. The performance works quite well, as Windows 8 is optimized to run on these specs without a hitch. The 4 inch display features an 800x480 resolution. It isn’t packing PureMotion technology and display quality is a little less sharp with the resolution. However, colour quality and viewing angles look fairly good. Connectivity options are plentiful with 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB tethering and more present. The 5 megapixel rear camera lacks the distinction of LED flash or nuanced apps like City Lens. The focus seems a bit off at times, especially when trying to capture macro images, but even in moderate lighting, the phone takes some reasonably sharp, colourful pictures. The Nokia Lumia 520 battery life relies on a 1430 mAh cell. That’s about 7 to 8 hours of heavy performance. Real world usage stretches this number significantly however, thanks to Windows Phone 8 OS being significantly lighter and with the reduced technology. Speaking of the OS, it delivers many of the typical apps like Nokia Music and Nokia Here in the colourful LiveTiles arrangement. Other than the typical Internet Explorer 10, Facebook and Gmail are also available. The depth of apps available for Windows Phone 8 is still meagre compared to Android and iOS, but it’s improving. Games like Temple Run, for example, are now available on the Windows Store. Pros: - Good performance and plentiful storage options - Decent 4 inch display - 5 megapixel camera is above average - Battery life is fairly good - Excellent design and build quality Cons: - Camera lacks LED flash; focus is a little off - Windows Phone 8 app selection improving but still lacking Verdict: The Nokia Lumia 520 packs great value for money, and even if you’re not too crazy about Windows 8, delivers excellent performance and features all around.
