Micromax Canvas Knight 2 E471 White
Solid device but better alternatives exist
3/ 5
Pros: - Strong performance; stock Android 5.0 - Good build and design - Rear camera works well Cons: - Overheats at times - Some interface performance issues Verdict: The Micromax Canvas Knight 2 does very well for itself in almost every way, if you can excuse some of its more serious issues. The only real problem is the number of alternatives available, each offering slightly more features. If those aren't available, then the Micromax Canvas Knight 2 could work but don't push it too hard. Micromax usually doesn't get a lot of credit for its work these days. It's interesting since the manufacturer was hailed as a rising star in 2011. While much of that popularity still remains, the budget segment these days has been ruled by the likes of Motorola. Thus we have the Micromax Canvas Knight 2. And honestly, it looks and feels really good. Is that enough to warrant the price though? Unlike many cheaper Android devices, the Micromax Canvas Knight 2 feels solid. There are metal bands on the sides and Corning Gorilla Glass on the front to help prevent any dents or scratches. In many ways, the look is very iPhone-esque, not that this is a bad thing. At 143 grams and measuring 0.6 cm thick, it's quite sleek. Rather than use an octa-core MediaTek CPU, the Micromax Canvas Knight 2 actually employs a 1.5 GHz, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor. This 64-bit CPU is also an octa-core chip in nature. It's accompanied by 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB internal storage and a microSD slot for up to 32 GB expandable storage. This results in some fairly strong performance when launching heavy apps but the device tends to heat up quickly. Gaming on the Canvas Knight 2 is a real gamble because of this. The 5 inch, 1280x720 resolution AMOLED screen looks good. No, it's not going to beat the Motorola Moto X (2nd gen) any time soon but that's not important. It offers a 294 pixel per inch density and manages decent viewing angles and colour quality. It also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, offering further protection. Balancing everything out is a 13 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and a Sony IMX214 sensor. This performs fairly well in all settings with fast shooting. Here's where things get a bit iffy. The battery life can last up to 8 hours of above average usage. The 2260 mAh capacity battery isn't as plentiful as other devices in its class, which we'll get to. There's also the issue of Android performance. Android 5.0 Lollipop is present, which is fabulous, and there aren't any annoying additions aside from some apps which can be uninstalled. However, navigation faces hiccups from time to time, including the odd crash. It's not very frequent but it can happen. Other recommendations: The Xiaomi Mi 4i is the obvious alternative. At Rs. 12,999 it offers a slightly higher clocked Snapdragon 615 and a full HD, 5 inch display. There's no microSD slot but 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB internal storage are provided. It also features better battery life thanks to the large 3120 mAh cell and can last the entire day without much issue. Then there's the Asus ZenFone 2 which costs Rs. 14,999. Though it comes with a quad-core Intel Atom Z3560 running at 1.8 GHz, it still offers some impressive performance. Along with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage, the microSD slot supports up to 64 GB of external space. The 5.5 inch display is large and has a full HD resolution. Even battery life is great with the 3000 mAh capacity battery.
