Nothing to differentiate from its older devices
If you own a Canvas HD or an equivalent of the typical budget Android smartphone, you can safely skip the Micromax Canvas 2.2 A114. It doesn’t boast much by way of new or interesting features, packing a quad core, 1.3 GHz MediaTek MT6582M SoC and 1 GB of RAM with no internal storage. A microSD slot is thankfully provided but you won’t be able to install apps on it. It’s especially wasteful considering the bloatware Micromax shoved into the device. The 5 inch IPS, qHD display is good overall with its viewing angles and colour quality but is far from the best display we’ve seen. Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, 3G, Wi-Fi and 2G constitute the connectivity options available. An 8 megapixel rear camera provides the optics and comes with 4x digital zoom, 1080p video recording and auto focus. The results are mixed, with shabby day time images and noisy night time stills but otherwise suits most casual purposes. The 2000 mAh Li-Ion cell delivers some rather underwhelming numbers in terms of screen-on time but at least makes it through the day. Android 4.2 Jellybean is far from being the latest build and as stated earlier, is loaded with bundled apps. The usual Google functions like Voice Search and Google Now remain though. Verdict The Micromax Canvas 2.2 A114 isn’t your next Android smartphone, even if it is fairly average overall. In terms of battery life, features, performance and functionality, you’re far better off opting for the Canvas HD or even a Lumia.

Moto G is a better option
Even though Micromax is busy emphasizing octa-core smartphones, such as the Canvas Knight A350, it’s still very much looking to cement its place in the Rs. 10K segment. The Micromax Canvas 2.2 A114’s features don’t offer much you haven’t seen before –a MediaTek MT6582M quad-core chipset clocked at 1.3 GHz with 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage is present. There’s a microSD slot for 32 GB more space though there’s not much internal space to install apps and customize the interface. The 5 inch IPS display also feels very lacklustre with its 960x540 resolution. While it does deliver good viewing angles and colour quality, it is susceptible to glare at times and doesn’t feel as sharp as the Canvas HD’s screen. As for the 8 megapixel rear camera, it promises full HD recording along with flash and a 4x zoom. It serves its purpose for regular shots, despite some dull colours, and even the video recording holds up decently despite the average bit-rate and shaky shots. Low-light photography is pretty much non-existent and indoor shots are downright terrible. The 2000 mAh battery delivers 5 to 5.5 hours of heavy performance, but the battery life isn’t too bad with average use. Android 4.2 Jellybean is bundled with plenty of non-useful apps but you might find something you like. As far as budget handhelds go, despite the price of Micromax Canvas 2.2 A114 being Rs. 10,350, it falls short of the Motorola Moto G in every possible way.

Better options available
The Micromax Canvas 2.2 A114 is an odd phone to classify. It’s relatively new but not much of a progression to the company’s line. Being aimed at the budget crowd – which is odd since you can obtain a Canvas HD for a bit more – the Canvas 2.2 A114 features a MediaTek MT6582M quad core SoC clocked at 1.3 GHz, with 1 GB of RAM. Internal storage is negligible and otherwise occupied but you can add new media via microSD slot (apps will be tougher though). The 5 inch IPS display has a 960x540 resolution which looks decent but still not as sharp as the Canvas HD’s screen. Connectivity features include GPS, 2G, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi as usual. The 8 megapixel rear camera sensor supports full HD recording, along with flash and auto focus. Night time shots are nothing to brag about but even day time stills and footage looks dull. Battery life relies on a 2000 mAh Li-Ion cell for up to 6 hours of above average usage. It should be enough to get you through the day but don’t expect the longest of life when using it continuously. Android 4.2 Jellybean comes with a fair amount of bloatware but the relevant Google apps still shine through. We would have preferred if Micromax had left some space for customization. Verdict Overall, the Micromax Canvas 2.2 A114 is more of the same when it comes to budget smartphones. Opt for a Nokia Lumia 620 which offers better performance overall instead.
