Though the word “selfie” no doubt takes much of its meaning from the word “self portrait”, it’s taken on a whole new definition in today’s world. The popularity of selfies has only risen in recent times with applications like Snapchat and Facebook’s own Slingshot attempting new and innovative uses for the same.
Selfies are popular but like self portraits, their quality relies as much on the tools available as on the skill of the person making it. That’s why we decided to look at the top 5 selfie phones available in today’s market along with their unique features.
Sony’s premium handset is excellent in just about every department and its rear 20.7 megapixel camera is even capable of 4K video recording. The Xperia Z2 still has a very capable front facing camera though with a 2.2 megapixel resolution.
It supports 1080p video recording for a compelling video conference, and the Xperia Z2’s water-proofing and dust resistance means you can take selfies in a variety of different settings. It doesn’t hurt that the Sony Xperia Z2 is an excellent package overall as well.

Apple has always been good with its cameras even if they’ve never sported high resolutions or underwater recording. The Apple iPhone 5S is no exception and despite the front camera having a 1.2 megapixel, it’s still excellent for taking selfies. Images are in HD (or roughly 1280×960 resolution) and there’s a backside illumination sensor for low-light images.
Video recording via FaceTime is also in 720p and provides for some of the best video chats in the smartphone market. Apple may due for a refresh this year with the iPhone 6 but the iPhone 5S is still a compelling option for selfies.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is once again a very good smartphone, though it was overpriced at launch. Thankfully, costs have come down since then and it’s worth it for the battery life, performance and display.
The 16 megapixel rear camera is also a great addition, filled with several new features, and the 2 megapixel wide-angle front camera lens is similarly excellent. It supports 1080p video recording and the lens allows for a wider range of images than your usual selfie device.

Of all the companies pushing for selfie cameras, HTC is pushing the hardest. This can be seen in the HTC One M8, which introduced Selfie Mode for setting a timer and taking images using the 5 megapixel BSI front sensor.
A ton of other features are also included such as HDR, a wide angle lens, 1080p video recording and modes like Dimension Plus that slightly alter the angle of an image after it’s been taken. The overall image quality is far better than most other smartphones even if you can’t use it underwater.

For those who need a cheaper version of the HTC One M8 but still want that great 5 megapixel front camera, the HTC Desire 816 is an excellent alternative. Along with HTC’s Selfie Mode, it features a BSI sensor and 1080p video recording. This is again the case of a more powerful sensor leading to better detailed images.
While it doesn’t seem to have a wide angle lens and the overall device is large, the HTC Desire 816’s camera is perfect for mid-tier users who want an excellent selfie camera.
