Apple has finally unveiled the new iPhones – iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Apple’s approach of simplicity and using emotion to connect with its users is commendable. The iPhone 7 makes a number of changes under the hood, but all most of us need to know is that it is faster, smoother, and better suited to a modern lifestyle.
DESIGN: It builds on to the iconic iPhone 6 shape, but with some subtle improvements. It carries of a cleaner look on the top and the bottom by a single lighting connector. Adding on to the classic gold, silver & rose gold colours, Apple has introduced a new set of colours – jet black and black. The Black one carries an all matte look which gives the phone a classier look while the jet black version has a glossy look.
HOME BUTTON: While the home button may look the same as before, it packs a whole new bunch of pressure sensitive feedbacks. The new home button is quite similar to force touch track pads found in the new Macbooks. Working in tandem with the new Taptic Engine, it gives you precise tactile feedback as you press, and allows for a whole new set of actions.
WATER RESISTANT: The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are now IP67 water and dust resistant. They can survive under 1m of water for 30 minutes, so don’t fret if you drop it in the bathtub or spill a drink over it. Now you can walk in the rain or even take a shower with it (although we won’t recommend you do that)!
CAMERAS: The notable camera upgrade is on the iPhone 7 Plus. It houses two new 12MP rear cameras with one of them being a wide angle lens. The camera also captures images at 2x Optical Zoom and 10x Digital Zoom helping you capture that long distance shot. The biggest thing to note here is that the Zoom is now Hardware driven, and not Software driven, giving the camera a definitive edge over other Smartphone cameras.
The iPhone 7 now features optical image stabilization, a wider aperture of ƒ/1.8, and a six-element lens to make it even better for shooting photos and videos in low light. And with advanced new features like wide color capture, the photos will look more vibrant than ever before.
Both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus feature a couple of new things like the new Quad LED true tone flash and even a raw image capture mode for the inner techie in you. The front camera is an all new 7MP unit that actually looks a lot better than previous iPhones and clicks awesome selfies.
DISPLAY: The IPS display is now 25% brighter and has a wider colour gamut. So whether you’re checking out photos of that perfect dress or Live Photos you took in the backyard, the colors will be so accurate it will look like you’re there.
SPEAKERS: Apple has added a second firing speaker, giving the phone stereo sound. It now delivers twice the audio output of iPhone 6s and an increased dynamic range.
Apple has come up with a set of EarPods with a new lightning connector that comes with the phone, by default. Sadly though, the trusty 3.5mm jack is no more. Apple, however, does soften the blow by bundling a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter to connect your favourite headphone/earphone with.
PERFORMANCE: The iPhone 7 comes with an all new A10 Fusion processor, which is said to be 40% faster than the last year’s chip. The quad core processor has 2 performance cores, and 2 power saving cores, with intelligence to switch apps between these. Having a better battery life than the previous models, iPhone 7 will last an average of two hours longer than the 6S and the 7 Plus will last an hour longer than the 6S Plus.
WIRELESS: iPhones are going wireless, and to start off, Apple has developed AirPods, a new set of wireless headphones designed with a huge amount of forward-thinking technology inside a tiny device. These AirPods are wireless, and are built on Bluetooth Low Energy tech. They come with a charging case, which doubles up as an enclosure, and are designed to be extremely intuitive to use. The AirPods promise a listening time of 5 hours on their in-built battery, and the charging enclosure can keep them charged for 24 hours of music, before requiring to be plugged in. This innovation comes at a steep price though – the AirPods will be priced at $159.
Apple also launched an updated version of its much loved Apple Watch – The Apple Watch Series 2, which has a built-in GPS, Water resistance upto 50 meters, a new lightning-fast dual-core processor and a display that’s two times brighter than before. The Apple Watch Series 2 also comes with a luxury variant, through Apple’s tie up with Hermes. There is also an Apple Watch Nike+ edition, for the runners out there.
Another big change for the iPhone this year is that Apple has (finally) doubled the storage available in all variants, including the old 6s line-up. The iPhone 7 will start with 32GB of storage and will be available for $649 and will go up to 256GB for $849. The iPhone 7 Plus will be more expensive, starting from $769 for the 32GB version and will go up to $963 for the top model.
Both new iPhone models have an India release date of October 7, till then the prices of the predecessors may get cheaper both online and at local sellers, which is a win-win situation for Apple lovers who were waiting for the prices to drop.
